About these drills
These short drills practise transferable writing skills such as purpose, coherence, detail, and tone. They are not a full writing test: answers are marked against a key, and they do not predict a CELPIP or IELTS score. Use the separate exam pathways for timed CELPIP or IELTS writing tasks. Our English has not yet been checked by a second reader.
CELPIP writing guide
Use this as a flexible plan, not a paragraph to memorize. It helps you cover the prompt, develop useful support, and leave time to edit.
Task 1: email plan
Spend a few minutes identifying the recipient, purpose, tone, and every requested point. Write a clear opening, one paragraph per main point with a specific detail, then close with an appropriate next step.
Task 2: opinion plan
Choose your position early. Build two focused reasons, explain the practical effect of each, and include a concrete example. A brief contrast with the other option can make your choice more convincing.
Final review
Reserve the last few minutes. Check every prompt requirement, paragraph flow, verb tense, articles, spelling, punctuation, repeated words, and whether your tone matches the reader.
Worked planning example
Prompt: Write to a community centre about improving its evening classes. Plan: recipient = programme manager; purpose = make suggestions; point 1 = add practical conversation classes with a short reason; point 2 = offer a second weekly time with a short example; tone = polite and constructive; closing = invite a reply.
